Preventing Common Eye Injuries At Work & Home

The eyes are among the most fragile parts of the human body, so they require careful protection to stay safe. Not only are they fragile but losing vision due to an injury would greatly affect your daily life.

You often hear about eye injuries sustained when people are at work. If you have a job that doesn’t put your eyes in danger, you might think this is something you don’t have to worry about. But did you know that almost half of eye injuries occur at home? We want to show you how to prevent eye injuries and tell you about some common dangerous scenarios to watch out for so you can keep your eyes healthy.

How to Prevent Eye Injuries

Whether at work or at home, the best way to prevent eye injuries is to wear the appropriate safety equipment. Goggles, safety glasses, or face shields will all protect you from dangerous objects or liquids that will damage your eyes if they come in contact. We know that no one wants to wear safety glasses in every situation, especially some at home, so keep reading to find out what situations to watch out for in order to keep your eyes healthy.

Common Situations Outside of Work That Can Cause Eye Injuries

While you may feel overly cautious putting on a pair of safety glasses in some of these situations, you’d feel much worse if you’re not wearing them when an accident occurs.

  • Yard work – Things like mowing the lawn, and using a power trimmer, or a hedge trimmer will all throw debris into the air. If you’re behind one of these machines, your eyes could be in the path of danger. With effective safety glasses, you won’t have to worry for a second.
  • Home improvement – Another activity where safety glasses are necessary. You don’t want your eyes exposed to errant nails, screws, or sawdust.
  • Cooking with grease – As you well know, grease pops and splatters. So, if you’re cooking with grease, be sure to use a grease shield or to put a top on your pan or pot.
  • Cleaning with chemicals – Be especially careful with chemicals like bleach. Careless use can result in a splash that reaches your eyes and seriously damages them.
  • Opening champagne – No one is going to pause a celebration to put on safety goggles before the champagne is popped, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be careful. If you’re not willing to use a rag to stop the cork, be sure to point it away from others and do this outside if you can so you avoid ricocheting.
  • Curling your hair – When getting ready for the day with a hot curling iron, it’s common to lose focus, whether from sleepiness, daydreaming, or multitasking. This can be dangerous, as one small slip could mean a curling iron to the eye. Always stay in focus when holding a hot curling iron near your face.
